How to Detect Effects of Oral Cancer

Posted .

Oral cancer is one of the leading threats facing adults today. Many people are aware of this, and how smoking can lead to getting oral cancer. It’s not as widely discussed that oral cancer pertains to all parts of the mouth, including the tongue, lips, and cheeks.

You should be aware that there are many early signs of oral cancer that you can be on the lookout for. Initially, oral cancer may feel like a canker sore. This may be accompanied by lumps forming in the mouth, including gums and lips. Additional common symptoms are as follows: white or red patches, bad breath, weight loss, unexplained bleeding from your mouth, and trouble speaking or chewing. Oral cancer may also cause you to have ear and throat pain as well as a change in your voice.

Having regular check-ups done by your dentist is the best way to detect oral cancer early on. Your doctor can find things that may otherwise go overlooked. After your cleaning is completed by the staff of River Valley Dental, Dr. Bryce Hanson will inspect the mouth for anything unusual.

If something unusual is spotted, we will run tests and give you advice on what to do next. It could be that what we find is actually non-cancerous.
